Description: This forest occurs in the outer Coastal Plain of Louisiana, on natural levees and terraces of the former channels of the Mississippi River, closely associated with the more upland forest type, Quercus virginiana - Quercus pagoda - Magnolia grandiflora / Cornus florida / Sanicula sp. Forest (CEGL007469). This forest occurs in lower, wetter portions of these flats, where water pools following rains. The canopy is dominated by Quercus virginiana, Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus nigra, Celtis laevigata, Ulmus americana, and Quercus pagoda. The open understory consists of Ilex opaca var. opaca and Morus rubra. The shrub stratum is locally dense, and dominated by Viburnum dentatum, with other shrubs and woody vines including Ampelopsis arborea, Ilex decidua, Berchemia scandens, Toxicodendron radicans, Callicarpa americana, and Sambucus canadensis. Herbs are few, except epiphytic Pleopeltis polypodioides ssp. michauxiana.
