Name: Vallisneria americana Riverine Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: Stands of this association consist of aquatic vegetation in alluvial rivers of the Piedmont, southern Appalachians, and possibly Atlantic Coastal Plain, dominated by Vallisneria americana. The extent and distribution of this vegetation type and its alliance are poorly understood. Heteranthera dubia (= Zosterella dubia) may be locally abundant. This rooted aquatic vegetation is documented from the channels of the Clinch and New rivers. New River occurrences have Elodea canadensis, Potamogeton foliosus, and Potamogeton nodosus.
