Description: This dense shrubland alliance of the mountains of Oregon and California occurs along ridges and upper slopes between 800 and 3300 m elevation. Stands are normally found on thin, rocky soils. This alliance grows in a climate with long, dry summers and wet winters. Average yearly precipitation totals vary from roughly 62 cm in the northern end of the range to 30 cm in the southern extremes. Chrysolepis sempervirens (= Castanopsis sempervirens) is the sole or dominant plant in the shrub canopy. Other shrubs may include Prunus emarginata, Symphoricarpos mollis, Garrya fremontii, Arctostaphylos patula, Arctostaphylos nevadensis, Quercus vacciniifolia, Ceanothus cordulatus, Ceanothus velutinus, and Amelanchier alnifolia. Emergent conifers may be present. The herbaceous layer is sparse.
