Name: Arctostaphylos glauca Shrubland Alliance Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This shrubland alliance occurs on coarse, thin soils in portions of southern California and Baja California where the temperatures are moderated by coastal influence. The summers are dry and warm, with high temperatures over 90 degrees Fahrenheit being fairly common. The winters are cool and moist, although they are decidedly drier than the coastal regions north of San Francisco. Yearly rainfall totals average about 35 cm, with the bulk falling between November and April. This shrubland alliance of coastal southern California and Baja California is dominated by Arctostaphylos glauca. Adenostoma fasciculatum is a common associate. Other shrubs present may include Cercocarpus montanus var. glaber, Salvia mellifera, Yucca whipplei, Ceanothus leucodermis, Arctostaphylos glandulosa, Rhamnus ilicifolia (= Rhamnus crocea ssp. ilicifolia), and Ceanothus cuneatus.
