Name: Quercus buckleyi - Juniperus ashei - Fraxinus texensis Forest
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This association consists of Quercus buckleyi-dominated vegetation of mesic slopes over calcareous soils of the eastern and southern Edwards Plateau and Lampasas Cut Plain, in central Texas. Stands are dominated by Quercus buckleyi, Juniperus ashei, and Fraxinus texensis. Associated species include Ulmus crassifolia, Celtis laevigata var. laevigata, Celtis laevigata var. reticulata, Quercus fusiformis, Quercus muehlenbergii, Quercus sinuata var. breviloba, and Prunus serotina var. eximia. These forests (typically with closed canopy, although sometimes with open canopies) lack Quercus laceyi, which is more characteristic of the Balcones portion of the Edwards Plateau. Adjacent to Quercus buckleyi forests, on deeper soils, are Quercus fusiformis woodlands, while Juniperus ashei woodlands occupy the drier slopes. Floodplains below Quercus buckleyi forests are dominated by Celtis laevigata, Ulmus americana, Carya illinoinensis, and Quercus fusiformis.
