Description: Stands of these central and southern California shrublands grow on intermittently flooded sites between sea level and 300 m elevation. Water chemistry is fresh. Summers are warm and dry, and the bulk of yearly precipitation falls between November and May. Average yearly rainfall totals between 60 and 120 cm. Winters are mild; freezes are rare. This alliance is dominated by Sambucus mexicana. Other shrubs present may include Vitis californica, Salix exigua, and Toxicodendron diversilobum. Emergent trees may be present and could include Populus fremontii, Fraxinus latifolia, and Quercus lobata. The herbaceous layer is dominated by graminoids.
