Description: Stands of this montane and subalpine shrubland of California and Oregon occur on ridges and upper slopes from 600-2200 m elevation. The climactic regime where this alliance grows is largely Mediterranean, though not as strongly as in more southerly parts of California. Winters are cool and very wet, with annual precipitation totals often in excess of 200 cm. Summers are warm and fairly dry. This shrubland is dominated by ~Quercus sadleriana$. Other shrubs present may include ~Prunus emarginata, Ceanothus cuneatus, Ceanothus cordulatus, Chrysolepis sempervirens (= Castanopsis sempervirens), Symphoricarpos mollis, Arctostaphylos patula, Quercus vacciniifolia, Holodiscus discolor$, and ~Ceanothus velutinus$. Emergent conifers may be present. The herbaceous layer is sparse.
