Description: This shrubland of coastal California and Baja California, Mexico, occurs on slopes with shallow soils in areas with long, dry summers ameliorated slightly by periodic penetration by the marine layer and coastal fog. Measurable precipitation, usually totaling about 60 cm/year, falls from November to April. Winters are very mild. Elevations range from sea level to 1200 m. This shrubland contains 3 or more ~Salvia$ species, none of which obtain dominance or importance over the others; ~Salvia apiana, Salvia mellifera$, and/or ~Salvia leucophylla$. Other shrubs may include ~Encelia farinosa, Encelia californica, Diplacus aurantiacus ssp. aurantiacus, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Artemisia californica, Baccharis pilularis$, and ~Opuntia$ spp. Emergent ~Malosma laurina, Rhus integrifolia$, and/or ~Sambucus mexicana$ may be present.
