Name: Picea glauca - Abies balsamea - Populus spp. Forest Alliance
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This upland sub-boreal forest alliance occurs from the western Great Lakes region to Manitoba. The canopy is moderately closed to closed and composed of a mix of northern coniferous and deciduous trees. Typical dominants are Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera, Picea glauca, and Populus tremuloides. Other common trees that may be abundant in some stands are Acer rubrum, Picea mariana, Pinus strobus, Populus balsamifera, and Thuja occidentalis. The sapling/shrub layer is usually moderately well-developed. Abies balsamea and Populus spp. are abundant saplings in most stands and the shrubs Acer spicatum, Corylus cornuta, Diervilla lonicera, Rubus pubescens, and Sorbus americana. Taxus canadensis may be found in stands near Lake Superior on islands such as Isle Royale and the Apostle Islands. The herbaceous layer is variable. It can be depauperate or species-rich. Species found in this stratum include Aralia nudicaulis, Eurybia macrophylla (= Aster macrophyllus), Symphyotrichum ciliolatum (= Aster ciliolatus), Cornus canadensis, Clintonia borealis, Galium triflorum, Maianthemum canadense, Mitella nuda, and Trientalis borealis. Lycopodium spp. and Sphagnum spp. are abundant in some stands. Stands of this alliance are found on upland sites with moist to dry-mesic, deep, mineral soils. Loams, clays, and silts are the most common surface soil types. The sites are generally relatively flat but can be on gentle to moderate slopes.
