Description: This foothill shrubland alliance of California and Baja California occurs at slightly higher elevations and on more mesic sites than other chaparral vegetation types. Elevations range from 300-1500 m. Stands on favorable sites recover from fire more quickly than most other chaparral vegetation types. Stands can be found on all slopes, and on deep or shallow soils. The soils may be rocky. Dense canopies and persistent leaf litter precludes much ground cover. The overall climate within the range of this alliance is Mediterranean, with cool, moist winters and long, dry summers. Average precipitation totals vary between 130 cm in the north and 80 cm in the south. This alliance is dominated by ~Quercus dumosa$, which is the sole or dominant shrub in the canopy, attaining at least 60% cover. Other shrubs present may include ~Ceanothus thyrsiflorus, Ceanothus leucodermis, Ceanothus verrucosus, Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californica), Rhamnus ilicifolia (= Rhamnus crocea ssp. ilicifolia), Adenostoma fasciculatum, Pickeringia montana, Diplacus clevelandii, Calamagrostis koelerioides (= Calamagrostis densa), Quercus turbinella, Quercus wislizeni, Quercus dunnii, Quercus john-tuckeri (= Quercus turbinella var. californica), Calochortus dunnii, Arctostaphylos glandulosa, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Adenostoma sparsifolium$, and ~Heteromeles arbutifolia$. Emergent individuals of ~Pinus sabiniana, Cercocarpus montanus var. glaber$, and/or ~Aesculus californica$ may be present. The herbaceous layer is sparse.
