Name: Artemisia californica - Salvia mellifera Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alliance is one of the more xeric expressions of the coastal sage scrub alliances. Growing on steep, south-facing slopes in the inland portions of cismontane southern California, stands of this alliance are subject to long, hot, dry summers. Precipitation averages about 30 cm per year, and falls as rain predominantly between November and April. Salvia mellifera and Artemisia californica are codominant in this shrubland. Other shrubs present may include Eriogonum fasciculatum, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Yucca whipplei, Lotus scoparius, Rhus integrifolia, Rhus ovata, and Salvia apiana. The herbaceous layer is highly variable.
