Description: This shrubland alliance of central and southern California occurs on south-facing, moderate to steep slopes between 100 and 1900 m elevation. This alliance is usually found on deep soils. Precipitation patterns where this alliance occurs are strongly seasonal, with long, dry summers and mild, moist winters. Yearly precipitation totals are between 75 cm in the north and 40 cm in the south. Many of the plants in this alliance are winter dormant. Stands of this alliance are dominated by Ceanothus leucodermis. Other shrubs present may include Rhus trilobata, Arctostaphylos glauca, Yucca whipplei, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Ceanothus integerrimus, Quercus dumosa, Heteromeles arbutifolia, and Eriodictyon spp. Emergent individuals of Quercus wislizeni may be present. The herbaceous layer is sparse.
