Name: Pinus attenuata Woodland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This woodland alliance of California's foothills and mountains is found on ridges and upper slopes on infertile soils. Some stands are found on soils derived from ultramafic parent materials. Stands occur from 180-2000 m of elevation, and sites are usually quite xeric. The unusually large range of this alliance is indicative of its tolerance to varied environmental factors such as precipitation. In the southern reaches of the range, this alliance may receive fewer than 60 cm of rain per year; at the northern extreme perhaps as much as 150 cm per year. As with most California alliances, this alliance is adapted to a Mediterranean climate with the bulk of precipitation falling between November and May. Summers are warm and dry. Pinus attenuata is the sole or dominant tree in the canopy. Other trees present may include Quercus chrysolepis, Quercus wislizeni, Pinus coulteri, Pinus sabiniana, Pinus contorta, Pinus radiata, and Pinus monticola. Shrubs may be infrequent to continuous, and could include Arctostaphylos patula, Arctostaphylos columbiana, Quercus vacciniifolia, and Lithocarpus densiflorus.
