Name: Carex elynoides - Lupinus argenteus Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association is known from broad, gentle alpine ridges of east-central Idaho. The association occurs on gentle to moderately steep ridgetops. Sites are immediately downwind of windward ridgecrest exposures at 2870-3290 m (9400-10,800 feet) elevation. Seasonal snow accumulation is low. The community is characterized by a short, dense, fibrous-rooted Carex elynoides-dominated turf. Festuca brachyphylla ssp. brachyphylla is a commonly associated grass species. Important herbaceous species include Lupinus argenteus, Phlox pulvinata, Potentilla diversifolia, Minuartia obtusiloba, and Ivesia gordonii. The leeward, concave microtopography of these sites allows greater snow accumulation, compared to the environmentally associated community, Carex elynoides - Oxytropis sericea. Soil disturbance resulting from the burrowing of rodents that utilize winter snow cover gives rise to consistently greater abundance of Lupinus argenteus in Carex elynoides - Lupinus argenteus compared to Carex elynoides - Oxytropis sericea Herbaceous Vegetation (CEGL001856).
