Name: Populus tremuloides / Quercus gambelii / Symphoricarpos oreophilus Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This deciduous forest is documented from central New Mexico and southwestern Utah where it occurs along drainages on plateaus and on mountain slopes. Elevations range from 2240-2460 m. Stands occur along intermittent streams on moderately steep to steep slopes with western aspects. Soils tend to be fine-textured. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense to dense tree canopy dominated by Populus tremuloides. Quercus gambelii dominates the tall-shrub layer and may be present in the tree canopy. Symphoricarpos oreophilus is typically present and may form the short-shrub layer with several other shrub species. The herbaceous layer may be diverse but is generally sparse.
