Description: This ponderosa pine community type is found in the Black Hills and surrounding areas of the western United States. Stands occur predominantly on north-facing slopes, with a slope of 33-46%. The canopy can be moderately closed to closed. The overstory is dominated by Pinus ponderosa. There is a substantial shrub layer that grows to approximately 1 m. This stratum is dominated by Physocarpus monogynus and includes Mahonia repens, Prunus virginiana, Symphoricarpos albus, and Arctostaphylos uva-ursi. The herbaceous layer contains species such as Antennaria rosea, Cerastium arvense, Galium boreale, Pulsatilla patens, and mosses and lichens.
