Description: This alliance of canyon bottoms and streams grows between 450 and 2000 m of elevation in cismontane California and Baja California, Mexico. At lower elevations stands are often found on north-facing slopes, while at higher elevations they are found on southern slopes. Soils are shallow and well-drained. Precipitation throughout the range of this alliance is strongly seasonal, with a Mediterranean pattern. Summers are warm and dry, while winters are cool and moist. Annual precipitation totals vary from 40 cm in the southern portion of the range, to over 200 cm in the north. This alliance contains ~Quercus chrysolepis$ as an important or dominant species in the tree canopy. The canopy may be two-tiered, with emergent conifers such as ~Pseudotsuga macrocarpa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Calocedrus decurrens, Abies concolor, Pinus coulteri, Pinus ponderosa$, and ~Pinus lambertiana$. The conifer component must be minor. The main tree canopy may contain ~Acer macrophyllum, Quercus kelloggii, Quercus garryana$, and ~Umbellularia californica$. Shrubs are infrequent, but could include ~Rubus$ spp., ~Ceanothus integerrimus, Pentagramma triangularis, Arctostaphylos mewukka, Silene lemmonii, Arbutus menziesii$, and ~Polystichum imbricans$.
