Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii / Quercus arizonica Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This highly diverse Madrean forest association is restricted to the central highlands of Arizona. It is specifically known from the Bradshaw Mountains, the Sierra Ancha, and along the Mogollon Rim. It also extends into New Mexico. Stands typically occur on cool, dry mesic sites across a variety of land forms. Aspects are southerly, and elevations range from 1770 to 2135 m (5800-7000 feet). Soils tend to be rocky and skeletal. Pseudotsuga menziesii and Pinus ponderosa are codominants; Abies concolor is absent or accidental. Juniperus deppeana is a constant species but a minor component of the subcanopy. The shrub layer is dominated by Quercus arizonica, with Quercus gambelii and Quercus emoryi poorly represented; Quercus hypoleucoides is absent. The herb layer is sparse and characterized by scattered bunch grasses, including Koeleria macrantha (= Koeleria pyramidata), Muhlenbergia longiligula, and Poa fendleriana. The most constant forbs are Comandra umbellata, Pseudocymopterus montanus, and Packera neomexicana (= Senecio neomexicanus).
