Name: Pinus ponderosa / Achnatherum hymenoides Sparse Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This is a very sparse woodland association, with very open stands of the conifers Pinus ponderosa and Juniperus monosperma. The shrub layer is composed of the broad-leaved, deciduous species Poliomintha incana and Cercocarpus montanus, with 1-5% cover. The herbaceous layer is sparse (typically <5% cover), with perennial grasses contributing the most cover. These include several species characteristic of sandy, dry substrates such as Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides), Sporobolus contractus, Andropogon hallii, and Muhlenbergia pungens.
