Name: Ephedra nevadensis - Ephedra viridis Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Stands of this alliance occur on canyon slopes in the Colorado Plateau and Mojave Desert of Arizona. Where described in the Grand Canyon, sites are restricted to steep scree slopes with northern aspects. Elevation ranges from 850-1190 m. The substrate is loose gravelly scree derived from sandstones and quartzites. Total mean annual precipitation is approximately 20 cm with almost all falling as rain. Information on other sites was not available. Stands are dominated by a sparse cover of xeromorphic evergreen and broad-leaved shrubs all ranging from 0.3-0.6 m in height. Total vegetation cover is 5-15%. The diagnostic shrub species are Ephedra nevadensis and Ephedra viridis. Other characteristic species include the shrubs Salvia dorrii, Lycium andersonii, Thamnosma montana, and the dwarf-shrub Gutierrezia sarothrae. Associated species include the shrubs Acacia greggii, Brickellia atractyloides, and Encelia frutescens, forbs such as Astragalus and Cryptantha spp., and the cacti Opuntia basilaris and Opuntia erinacea.
