Name: Fraxinus pennsylvanica - (Ulmus americana) Forest Alliance
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This alliance, found in the northern Great Plains, is composed of forests found along watercourses. Communities in this alliance have moderate to closed tree canopies composed almost exclusively of deciduous trees. In the Dakotas, the canopy height is between 4.7 and 8 m, but it may be taller in Minnesota. The shrub layer can be sparse to moderately dense. The herbaceous layer is also variable, often varying inversely with the tree canopy density. Across the range of this alliance, the most abundant tree species are Fraxinus pennsylvanica and Ulmus americana. Celtis spp., Populus deltoides, and Quercus macrocarpa are often present and become more common in the eastern portion of this alliance's range. Populus tremuloides and Tilia americana occur only in the east. Common shrubs include Juniperus scopulorum (in the west), Rosa spp., Prunus virginiana, Symphoricarpos occidentalis (in the west), and Vitis spp. Herbaceous species of this alliance include Carex spp., Piptatherum micranthum (= Oryzopsis micrantha) (in the west), and Taraxacum spp. Stands of this alliance are found on upland sites where the water table is within the rooting zone for part of the year. These sites are very rarely flooded to the surface. Most stands are found at the bases of slopes near streams, rivers, lakes, or in intermittent watercourses. The mineral soils are deep and moderately to poorly drained. They are typically silty clay, clay, or silty loam.
