Name: Amelanchier utahensis - Cercocarpus montanus Shrubland Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: The description for this association is based on information from Colorado; its characteristics in Nevada and Utah are unknown, and will be described when more information becomes available. This plant association is found on generally south- to east-facing, moderate to steep slopes in Rio Blanco County in Colorado. Its elevational range is between 6300-7550 feet. Relative to other mixed mountain shrub types, it is found on the driest sites with the least soil development and low diversity. Exposed ground is moderate to extensive, averaging 40%. Soils tend to be shallow to deep, but shallow enough that many large rocks reside at the surface. This may be an ecotone community since Amelanchier utahensis is often seen growing on moister lower sections of a slope with Cercocarpus montanus above on the drier sections. It is characterized by a more open shrub layer and a sparse understory relative to other mixed mountain shrub types. Amelanchier utahensis and Cercocarpus montanus are the dominants of as many as 16 shrub species in this association. Symphoricarpos oreophilus can dominate the lower shrub layer. Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides) and Agropyron species are most common in the herbaceous layer which has been reported to contain as many as 31 species.  Accession Code: VB.CC.25052.AMELANCHIERUTAH Plot-observations of this Community Concept: 0
