Description: Shrublands included in this alliance occur in southeastern Arizona growing on north- and east-facing mountain slopes at 1600-1900 m in elevation. Typically, sites are on moderately steep to steep rocky slopes. On lower elevation sites, stands are restricted to mesic topographic positions. Soils are calcareous, derived from the limestone parent material. Stands have a moderately dense, diverse layer of broad-leaved deciduous and evergreen shrubs 2-3 m tall. The dominant, consistent species are ~Rhus virens var. choriophylla$, an evergreen shrub, and ~Cercocarpus montanus var. paucidentatus$, a deciduous shrub. Other characteristic shrubs include ~Quercus pungens, Mortonia scabrella (= Mortonia sempervirens ssp. scabrella), Ceanothus greggii, Nolina$ spp., and ~Dasylirion wheeleri$. The usually sparse understory is dominated by graminoids such as ~Bouteloua curtipendula, Muhlenbergia emersleyi, Aristida purpurea var. nealleyi (= Aristida glauca)$, and ~Eragrostis intermedia$ with forbs like ~Viguiera dentata, Verbesina rothrockii$, and ~Notholaena$ spp. Scattered trees, such as ~Pinus discolor$, may be present.
