Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii - (Tsuga heterophylla) / Rhododendron macrophyllum Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Pseudotsuga menziesii and Calocedrus decurrens dominate the canopy. Abies grandis and Pinus lambertiana are often present. The regeneration layer usually consists of Pseudotsuga menziesii, Calocedrus decurrens, and Abies grandis. Traces of Tsuga heterophylla are present in about half of the stands of this association, in both the canopy and regeneration layers. Rhododendron macrophyllum, Gaultheria shallon, and Mahonia nervosa (= Berberis nervosa) dominate the shrub layer. Small amounts of Holodiscus discolor and Whipplea modesta may be present. Herbs are often sparse, but traces of some species, especially Linnaea borealis, Goodyera oblongifolia, Galium triflorum, Viola sempervirens, Pteridium aquilinum and Synthyris reniformis, occur. This association is often found in depressions, swales or on east- or west-facing slopes. However, most sites are too droughty for abundant Tsuga heterophylla establishment. Most stands are below 3000 feet and on gentle to moderately steep slopes. Soils are usually moderately deep and stony.
