Name: Carnegia gigantea Wooded Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Wooded shrublands included in this alliance are characteristic of the Sonoran Desert. Stands commonly occur on lower slopes of mountains, foothills, bajadas, and less commonly in valleys and plains. Freezing winter temperatures limit the elevation and northern extent of these stands. Northern stands are restricted to the warmer southern and southwestern slopes, and in the southern extent of Mexico, stands are restricted to northern slopes. Substrates are gravelly, well-drained, coarse-textured soils. These shrublands have a diagnostic sparse, emergent tree layer of Carnegia gigantea (3-16 m tall). The dominant vegetation is a sparse to moderately dense woody canopy that is typically codominated by the tall shrubs Prosopis velutina and Parkinsonia microphylla with Olneya tesota and Fouquieria splendens abundant in many stands. Many other shrubs, dwarf-shrubs and cacti species may be present. The herbaceous layer is typically sparse with annuals seasonally present.
