Description: These dense shrublands occur along the upper slopes in the Snake River canyons in Idaho and eastern Oregon at elevations from 1130-1370 m, and on northern slopes in the Blue Mountains in Oregon at elevations of 500-1770 m. The climate is temperate, continental. Mean annual precipitation is approximately 25-30 cm. Precipitation primarily occurs in the winter as snow or rain. This moisture is stored in the soil and utilized during the dry summers. Stands are typically found on steep northern slopes on the upper third of the canyon side. These shaded sites are mesic enough to support these shrubs in this bunchgrass zone, but are too dry for trees. Soils are moderately deep, silt loam or loam with few rock fragments (less than 15% by volume and no rock cover). Parent materials include basalt colluvium, loess, lava and tuff. Vegetation included in this alliance has a dense woody layer (usually less than 2 m tall) that is dominated by the cold-deciduous, broad-leaved shrub ~Physocarpus malvaceus$. Other shrubs include ~Symphoricarpos albus, Rosa$ spp., ~Amelanchier alnifolia$, and ~Prunus virginiana$. The herbaceous layer is typically relatively sparse (10-20% cover). It is composed of a mixture of perennial bunch grasses like ~Pseudoroegneria spicata$ and ~Festuca idahoensis$; perennial forbs such as ~Agastache urticifolia, Geum triflorum, Perideridia gairdneri$, and ~Achillea millefolium$; and the annual forb ~Galium aparine$. Moss and lichen cover is notable and averages 13% cover. The exotic species ~Bromus briziformis$ is often present and may be relatively abundant. Adjacent stands include grasslands dominated by ~Pseudoroegneria spicata$ on hotter/drier aspects, and ~Pseudotsuga menziesii / Physocarpus malvaceus$ forests and woodlands on mid or lower slopes where soil moisture is concentrated from slope seepage.
