Name: Scirpus cyperinus Seasonally Flooded Southern Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This association is a semi-natural type, consisting of Scirpus cyperinus as an essentially monospecific stand, especially in artificial wetlands, such as borrow pits or ponds. The water table is at or above the soil surface for at least part of the growing season. The dominant species, Scirpus cyperinus, often forms dense, almost monotypic stands. Carex spp. and Schoenoplectus spp. (= Scirpus spp.) are often found in this community. Other co-occurring species of this association are not fully known. It is a widespread type. At Fort Benning, Georgia, Scirpus cyperinus occurs with Saccharum giganteum, Juncus sp., and occasional Alnus serrulata and Nyssa biflora in beaver ponds and other hydrologically enhanced areas. In the Interior Low Plateau of Tennessee, Scirpus cyperinus is commonly found with Typha latifolia in roadside ditches and on the margins of ponds and reservoirs.
