Name: Ribes montigenum Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alliance occurs on rocky talus slopes in the alpine tundra in the Colorado Front Range. Stands are found in the lower alpine tundra close to the krummholz between 3350-3450 m elevation, on warm, dry microsites on low-gradient, stable scree slopes and on moraines. The ground is covered with cobble-sized rocks and is nearly blown free of snow in the winter. Soils are young and poorly developed. The vegetation in the alliance occurs as small patches in warm, dry microsites between the rocks. Ribes montigenum is the dominant species with an average cover of 85%. Aquilegia caerulea var. caerulea, Polemonium pulcherrimum ssp. delicatum, Penstemon whippleanus, and Thalictrum sparsiflorum are the most common forbs, and when present, occur in low abundance. Moss cover is very sparse due to the dry, rocky substrate and the Ribes montigenum leaf litter that covers the ground surface.
