Description: Shrublands in this alliance occur in desert basins or playas in Nevada, Arizona, and southern and eastern California. Elevations range from sea level to 1600 m. Climate is arid to semi-arid with hot summers. Winter rain makes up the majority of the annual precipitation. Sites are generally flat to gently sloping saline valley bottoms and playas. Soils are deep, saline, alkaline, clay loams. The vegetation has a generally sparse shrub layer that is less than 1.5 m tall and is strongly dominated by ~Suaeda moquinii$ with scattered ~Atriplex polycarpa, Atriplex canescens, Allenrolfea occidentalis$, or ~Sarcobatus vermiculatus$ in some stands. The sparse herbaceous layer includes the forbs ~Bassia hyssopifolia$ and ~Salicornia maritima (= Salicornia europaea)$. Graminoids are typically not present except for occasional ~Sporobolus airoides$. The adjacent shrublands are dominated by ~Sarcobatus vermiculatus$ or ~Atriplex polycarpa$.
