Name: Carex buxbaumii Seasonally Flooded Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Vegetation types within these seasonally flooded, temperate or subpolar grasslands are found in peat bogs, marshes, and wet meadows from near sea level in the Pacific Northwest to moderately high (3200 m) elevations in the Rocky Mountains. Types occur in moderately broad valley bottoms in wet meadows or fens. Soils are mineral with accumulations of well-decomposed organic matter throughout the upper soil horizon. Wet stands may have accumulations of organic matter 20-35 cm thick overlying clayey mineral soils, resulting in a perched water table. Occurrences are widespread but uncommon. Vegetation types within this alliance are dominated by Carex buxbaumii with greater than 25% cover in the graminoid stratum. Carex aquatilis, Carex saxatilis, and Carex utriculata are present and occasionally codominant. Deschampsia caespitosa, Caltha leptosepala, Pedicularis groenlandica, and Ligusticum tenuifolium are among the common associates typically present in minor cover. Adjacent wetlands are often dominated by sedges such as Carex utriculata and Carex aquatilis. Adjacent upland communities are Pinus contorta or Picea engelmannii forests.
