Placement of this vegetation in shrublands is related to disturbance frequency, both natural and anthropogenic. This alliance is present in the following regions: Piedmont, Cumberland Plateau, Coastal Plain, Ozark Highlands, Boston Mountains, Ouachita Mountains, Osage Hills, and Arkansas Valley.
