Description: This shrubland alliance occurs in major upland drainage bottoms in the mountains of Montana and Wyoming, at elevations of approximately 1400-1650 m. Sites are moderately sloping (10-20%) and typically found on the cooler north and east aspects. Substrates are relatively moist, gravelly soils. There is a relatively dense tall-shrub layer, dominated by the cold-deciduous shrub ~Acer glabrum$ (65% cover). Scattered ~Populus tremuloides$ saplings may also be present in this layer. The short-shrub layer is dominated by ~Philadelphus lewisii$ with lesser amounts of ~Ribes oxyacanthoides ssp. setosum (= Ribes setosum), Rubus idaeus$, and ~Sambucus racemosa$. The herbaceous layer is moderately dense (50% cover) and often diverse. It is dominated by perennial forbs such as ~Osmorhiza berteroi (= Osmorhiza chilensis), Urtica dioica, Veronica americana, Ranunculus uncinatus$, and ~Heracleum sphondylium$. The only grass is ~Poa palustris$, and annual forbs include ~Galium aparine$ and ~Stellaria media$. Adjacent vegetation includes ~Populus tremuloides$ forests down slope on flatter sites and conifer forests on drier upland sites.
