Description: This riparian vegetation occurs along stream channels in V-shaped valleys in mountains of southeastern Oregon. Stands are typically narrow, occupying elevated streambanks and terraces within the floodplain, but can be broader where environmental conditions permit. Sites are flat to gently sloping (<10%) with the water table generally >1 m deep. Soils are derived from alluvium. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense to dense (up to 98% cover), cold-deciduous tall-shrub layer (2-5 m tall) that is dominated by ~Salix lutea$ with ~Salix boothii$ sometimes codominating. The short-shrub layer is typically sparse and averages between (25-30% cover), with a range of 5-85% cover. The most consistent short shrub is ~Rosa woodsii$ with ~Ribes aureum$ or ~Ribes inerme$ codominating. Other shrub species include ~Salix exigua, Salix geyeriana$, and ~Symphoricarpos oreophilus$. The herbaceous layer is moderately dense (30-50% cover) with a fairly even mixture of perennial graminoids and forbs.
