Description: Vegetation types within this alliance occur in the lower montane areas of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Landforms that support these types can range from moderately wide valleys along low terraces and floodplains to streambanks on narrow reaches. The alluvial soils are saturated sandy loams and clay loams with high organic matter in the upper layers. The tall-shrub layer is dominated by ~Salix ligulifolia$. The canopy is dominated by 30-50% cover of ~Salix ligulifolia$ mixed with 0-40% cover each of ~Salix monticola, Salix drummondiana$, and ~Salix geyeriana$. Several other willows may be present with 5-10% cover, including ~Salix bebbiana, Salix lucida ssp. lasiandra (= Salix lasiandra), Salix exigua, Salix wolfii$, and ~Salix planifolia$. Additional shrubs present include ~Cornus sericea, Alnus incana$, and ~Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (= Pentaphylloides floribunda)$. Graminoid cover is sparse to dense. A variety of species have a cover of up to 40%, including ~Carex utriculata, Carex nebrascensis, Carex pellita (= Carex lanuginosa), Juncus balticus$, and ~Calamagrostis canadensis$. Forb cover is generally low. This association is often adjacent to and intermixes with ~Carex aquatilis$ or ~Carex utriculata$ meadows.
