Description: This riparian shrubland alliance is found in the mountains of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. These communities occur in wide, glaciated valleys on snowmelt-fed swales, as well as in narrow valleys with sinuous streams and wet floodplains associated with beaver ponds. Snowmelt is the primary source of moisture during the growing season. Soils range from silty loams to loamy sands derived from glacial till. Mottling is often evident. Some stands occur on well-drained, mineral soils with well-oxygenated water and no mottled or gleyed layers. ~Salix planifolia$ forms a dense shrub layer with up to 90% cover. A few other willow species are also present, including ~Salix brachycarpa, Salix monticola$, and ~Salix wolfii$. ~Calamagrostis canadensis$ and ~Deschampsia caespitosa$ dominate the dense and sometimes rich graminoid layer with up to 70% cover. Several ~Carex$ species are also present, including ~Carex aquatilis, Carex utriculata$, and ~Carex scopulorum$. The forb layer can be diverse, but generally has less than 50% total cover. Forb species can include ~Caltha leptosepala, Cardamine cordifolia, Pedicularis groenlandica$, and ~Mertensia ciliata$.
