Name: Pinus echinata - (Pinus taeda) - Quercus falcata / Dichanthelium sphaerocarpon Forest
Reference: Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...
Description: This forest occurs west of the Mississippi River in the West Gulf and Upper West Gulf Coastal Plain ecoregions. Stands are dominated by Pinus echinata with a host of primarily dry and dry-mesic site hardwood species. The most characteristic hardwood, often the second most important overstory tree, is Quercus falcata. A number of shrub and herbaceous species are usually present which are intermediate in moisture preference. This type lacks the relatively rich component of legumes, members of the sunflower family, and other species diagnostic of subxeric Pinus echinata communities of the region, and lacks more mesic species indicative of Pinus echinata - Quercus alba / Viburnum (dentatum, acerifolium) Forest (CEGL003855).
