Name:
Poa (fendleriana, nemoralis ssp. interior) - Sporobolus heterolepis Herbaceous Alliance
Reference:
Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description:
This alliance, reported from the Black Hills in South Dakota, contains montane grasslands. These moist meadows have a rich diversity of dominants, including Hierochloe odorata, Achnatherum richardsonii (= Stipa richardsonii), Oryzopsis asperifolia, Phleum pratense, Agrostis hyemalis, Danthonia intermedia, Poa compressa, Poa fendleriana, Poa nemoralis ssp. interior (= Poa interior), Poa pratensis, Bromus marginatus, Bromus anomalus, Elymus repens (= Elytrigia repens), Leymus innovatus, Carex microptera, Carex hoodii, and Carex tenera. A wide diversity of showy forbs were also present, including Iris missouriensis, Delphinium bicolor, Astragalus alpinus, Lupinus sericeus, Dodecatheon meadia, Balsamorhiza sagittata, and others. Sporobolus heterolepis, Achnatherum richardsonii, Hesperostipa spartea (= Stipa spartea), Hesperostipa curtiseta (= Stipa curtiseta), and Nassella viridula may have been more common in the well-drained portions of these meadows. Further study is needed to characterize this alliance. Stands have been reported from the Limestone Plateau region of the Black Hills, which receives an annual rainfall of 50-60 cm of rain a year. The region is generally at elevations of 6500-7000 feet; thus, snow remains in the mountain meadows late into spring.
