Name: Sporobolus nealleyi - Calylophus hartwegii Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This Chihuahuan Desert lowland grassland association occurs on gypsum outcrops over a range of elevations from 1160-1860 m (3800-6100 feet). However, most stands occur at elevations below 1520 m (5000 feet) adjacent to or in basin bottom alluvial flats. It is found less frequently on upland hillslope gypsum outcrops. It is known only from the northern Jornada and northern Tularosa basins in central New Mexico. This gypsiferous grassland is characterized by well-represented to abundant Sporobolus nealleyi in association with the perennial forb Calylophus hartwegii. Among the other 22 shrubs recorded, Ephedra torreyana and Artemisia bigelovii are the most prevalent and abundant. Grass diversity is relatively low (5 species) and, other than Sporobolus nealleyi, poorly represented. Forb diversity is moderate (19 species) and includes several gypsophilous species besides Calylophus hartwegii such as Selinocarpus lanceolatus and Mentzelia perennis.
