Name: Populus angustifolia / Prunus virginiana Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This is a riparian woodland of low-elevation (5600-8100 feet) foothills in Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming, along the western edge of the Great Plains and in the intermountain basins. Stands of this association occur in narrow to moderately broad stream valleys and canyons in the foothills on narrow, elevated, or steeply sloping streambanks and benches. Stream channels are broad, low-gradient, and slightly sinuous (Rosgen's Stream Type: B3), and the soils are shallow sandy clay loams with many fine layers from fluvial deposition. Populus angustifolia (or in some stands Populus X acuminata) dominates the overstory, and Acer negundo may also be present in substantial amounts. Prunus virginiana dominates the shrub layer, often with very dense growth. The shrub layer may also include substantial amounts of Alnus incana, Betula occidentalis, and Symphoricarpos spp. Prunus virginiana is considered a non-obligate riparian species because it typically grows on the outer edge of the riparian area.In the San Juan and Canadian River watersheds of northern New Mexico, preliminary data suggest that this type occurs at elevations ranging from 2070 to 2400 m (6800-7900 feet) on mid bars to higher terraces that are infrequently flooded (10- to 100-year estimated recurrence interval). Accordingly, soils vary from wet and rocky Fluvaquentic Endoaquolls to drier Fluventic Ustochrepts. Populus angustifolia dominates a moderately open canopy (>50% cover). Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Quercus gambelii occasionally occur on the fringes of stands. In the undergrowth, Prunus virginiana is the diagnostic shrub along with Cornus sericea ssp. sericea. Salix spp. are poorly represented or absent. Herbaceous cover is well-represented to abundant and typically dominated by exotic grasses such Poa pratensis, Agrostis gigantea, and Bromus inermis. Forb wetland indicators recorded for the type are Hydrophyllum fendleri, Heracleum maximum, and Equisetum arvense.
