Name: Salix petiolaris - Salix spp. Temporarily Flooded Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This alliance, found near the northern part of the tallgrass prairie-forest border, is a wet shrubland in a prairie matrix. Clumps of low shrubs less than 1.5 m tall and tall and medium-height graminoids comprise the vegetation. Salix discolor and Salix petiolaris are the most abundant shrubs. Betula pumila, Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (= Pentaphylloides floribunda), and Spiraea alba are also common. Thickets of small Populus tremuloides or Populus balsamifera are found in some stands. Typical graminoids include Elymus trachycaulus, Andropogon gerardii, Calamagrostis canadensis, Carex pellita (= Carex lanuginosa), Carex sartwellii, Carex tetanica, Muhlenbergia richardsonis, Panicum virgatum, Poa palustris, and Spartina pectinata. Forbs are moderately abundant and include species such as Symphyotrichum lanceolatum (= Aster lanceolatus), Symphyotrichum novae-angliae (= Aster novae-angliae), Senecio spp., and Solidago spp. This alliance occurs on flat to gently sloping sites. Soils are poorly drained to very poorly drained and range from loamy sand to clay loam. Most sites have calcareous soils.
