Name: Sibbaldia procumbens Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Vegetation in this alliance occurs in subalpine meadows and the alpine tundra in the mountains of Wyoming, between 3050 and 3510 m elevation. Winters are long and cold, with the majority of precipitation falling as snow. Strong westerly winds are common in the winter and spring. The vegetation in the alliance is often found in snowbed habitats, areas where snow accumulates in the winter and melts late in summer. Parent material is granite or quartzite. Soils are poorly developed and are classified as Inceptisols (Cryochrepts). Sibbaldia procumbens is the dominant species in the herbaceous canopy. Lewisia pygmaea, Polygonum bistortoides, Potentilla diversifolia, Carex nigricans, and Juncus drummondii are common associates. The moss Polytrichum juniperinum may occur in the cryptogam layer.
