Name: Pinus flexilis Temporarily Flooded Woodland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Woodlands included in this minor alliance are restricted to a 20-ha temporarily flooded site in southern Idaho's upper Pahsimeroi Valley. The elevation is approximately 1850 m and the climate is cold temperate. Mean annual precipitation is 20 cm, which mostly occurs during the winter as snow. Sites typically have snow cover in the winter and may be local cold-air sinks. Stands occur in association with alkaline spring systems. Heavy livestock use creates compacted soils and areas of bare ground. These phreatophyte stands have an open canopy dominated by the evergreen needle-leaved tree Pinus flexilis. These trees are reproducing with several sapling and pole-size individuals present. Juniperus scopulorum may be present in the subcanopy, with Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (= Pentaphylloides floribunda) dominating the shrub layer and Distichlis spicata dominating the herbaceous layer. Additional information of this vegetation is not available.
