Name: Pseudotsuga macrocarpa Forest Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This montane alliance of central and southern California occurs primarily on north-facing slopes at elevations between 275 and 2400 m. Slopes can be moderate to steep. Annual precipitation varies with elevation, ranging from 70-100 cm, with a distinct summer dry season. Precipitation is episodic, and droughts of several years duration are not uncommon. Soils that support this alliance are rocky and derived from schists or sandstones. These soils are skeletal and well-drained. Stands of this forest alliance are dominated by Pseudotsuga macrocarpa. Other trees present may include Quercus kelloggii, Quercus chrysolepis, Calocedrus decurrens, Pinus coulteri, Pinus ponderosa, Pinus monophylla, Pinus lambertiana, and Abies concolor. On flat sites the canopy tends to be continuous; on steeper sites the canopy is more intermittent. There is no subcanopy, and the shrub and herbaceous layers are sparse.
