Name: Calamagrostis breweri Dwarf-shrub Herbaceous Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This alpine and subalpine grassland of California and Oregon requires fine-textured soils which are moist for most of the year. Precipitation within the elevational range of this alliance (between 1300 and 3800 m) falls predominantly as snow. Snowmelt maintains soil moisture through most of the dry spring and summer months. This alliance is also found on stream and lake margins that maintain the proper soil moisture content. The growing season is limited by snow. Calamagrostis breweri is often the sole, dominant or important species in the herbaceous canopy with emergent dwarf-shrubs. Ptilagrostis kingii may also be important in the herbaceous canopy. Other species present may include Oreostemma alpigenum (= Aster alpigenus), Kalmia polifolia, Vaccinium caespitosum, Phyllodoce breweri, Phyllodoce spp., Eriogonum spp., Potentilla spp., Penstemon heterodoxus, Juncus mertensianus, Carex filifolia, Trisetum spicatum, Deschampsia caespitosa, and Achillea millefolium var. occidentalis.
