Description: This association includes Pinus ponderosa stands generally on coarse-textured soils with few or no shrubs and an herbaceous layer dominated by Hesperostipa comata (= Stipa comata), Achnatherum lemmonii (= Stipa lemmonii), Achnatherum occidentale (= Stipa occidentalis), Achnatherum thurberianum (= Stipa thurberiana), or Aristida purpurea var. longiseta (30-60% cover). The association is defined primarily by sandy soils and the absence of Festuca idahoensis and/or trace only amounts of Pseudoroegneria spicata. There are 13 native bunchgrass species (35-100% cover), 51 (49 native) perennial forbs (1-20% cover), 19 (11 native) annuals (1-20% cover), 3 shrubs in trace amounts, 7 dwarf-shrubs (1-9% cover). This is differentiated from other Pinus ponderosa / Stipa associations in the eastern Cascade that usually contain Purshia tridentata.
