Name: Pinus engelmannii / Quercus hypoleucoides Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This highly diverse `Madrean' woodland association is restricted to the isolated `sky island' mountain ranges of southern Arizona and northern Mexico. This association may also occur in the Animas Mountains of New Mexico. In the U.S., it is known only from the Santa Rita and Chiricahua mountains, but it may be more prevalent in Mexico. This association occurs on moderate to steep slopes of northerly aspects or on benches. Elevations range from 1770-2165 m (5800-7100 feet). Soils are predominantly skeletal Ustochrepts. Generally, sites are warm and dry. The vegetation is characterized by open stands of Pinus engelmannii with Pinus leiophylla as an occasional codominant. Quercus hypoleucoides dominates the subcanopy and shrub layer; Quercus arizonica is common, but never dominant. Other shrubs may include Arbutus arizonica and Garrya wrightii. Muhlenbergia longiligula is well-represented and dominates the herb layer, which is otherwise diverse, variable, and sparse.
