Name: Crataegus douglasii Intermittently Flooded Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: Vegetation types within this alliance are found throughout the Columbia Basin of the interior Pacific Northwest, and are most common in the Palouse grasslands region. Elevations of occurrence range from 550-850 m in this semi-arid steppe. Vegetation within this alliance is typically found on aggraded valley floors bordering intermittent or permanent streams, where spring flooding occurs and soils remain moist through the growing season. Soils are generally accumulated glacial outwash materials of fine silts and clays of moderate depth. Vegetation within this alliance is usually a dense thicket of the broad-leaved deciduous shrub Crataegus douglasii, often with a canopy 5-7 m in height. A very sparse tree layer of Pinus ponderosa or Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa may occasionally be present. Other tall shrubs, such as Amelanchier alnifolia and Prunus virginiana, can share the upper canopy. A medium shrub layer of Symphoricarpos or Spiraea is often present, depending upon the density of the upper canopy shrubs. The understory usually contains a lush layer of tall (up to 2 m tall) perennial forbs, such as Heracleum maximum, Hydrophyllum fendleri, or Urtica dioica. The understory vegetation of many stands within this alliance is often very degraded by livestock grazing and contains non-native grasses. There is a phase within associations of this alliance in which there is a tree layer of Populus tremuloides, but apparently the phase does not differ from typical stands in environmental characteristics. Adjacent vegetation is usually Artemisia steppe or Pseudoroegneria - Festuca grassland.
