Name: Pinus ponderosa - Quercus garryana / Carex geyeri Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This is a mixed conifer - deciduous broad-leaved woodland association confined to the eastern Cascades foothills near the Columbia River gorge. These sites are generally found along lower treeline on slopes or ridgetops between 1700-3100 feet elevation. The existing vegetation is characterized by a tall Pinus ponderosa layer over a shorter Quercus garryana layer. The tree canopy is mostly open and only rarely approaches being a closed stand. Quercus garryana may form clones that are 'closed patches' within a stand. Quercus garryana may dominate a shrub layer which usually has few shrub species. The herbaceous layer is patchy and dominated by graminoids primarily Carex geyeri with Festuca idahoensis or Bromus tectorum.
