Description: This diabase flatrock community occurs on level upland ridges over diabase and perhaps other mafic rocks. It is restricted to the Virginia Piedmont. Tree canopy is generally composed of sparse, stunted Juniperus virginiana. The herbaceous ground layer consists of mixed forbs and grasses including Fimbristylis annua, Opuntia humifusa, Cyperus squarrosus, Trifolium virginicum, Muhlenbergia capillaris, Schizachyrium scoparium, and others.
