Description: A grassland of southern California valleys which often intergrades into creosotebush scrub. Stand composition varies, desert needlegrass is the unifying species. Achnatherum speciosum (= Stipa speciosa) is the sole dominant or important grass in the ground layer. Other plants in the herb layer may include Nassella lepida (= Stipa lepida), Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides), Nassella cernua (= Stipa cernua), Poa secunda, and Elymus elymoides. Grasses <1 m; cover open.
